My friend Leslie cooked these suckers up at a courthouse board meeting and they were nuts. We ended up making them the next night and it was a big winner with the fam. If you want something delicious that you can make in bulk, I highly recommend these. I changed the recipe a little bit to add some more protein, and I subbed a few things. Go make them, the hardest part is being patient with the onions!
Ingredients
Meat and Onions
- 2 tbsp. butter
- 2 large sweet onions, sliced
- 3 pounds ground beef or turkey
- 1 tbsp. soy sauce
- 1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
- Kosher salt and black pepper to taste
The Rest
- 36 slider buns
- 16 ounces gruyere cheese, chopped
- 1 tbsp. soy sauce
- 1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
- 6 tbsp. butter
- 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
- 1 tablespoon fresh thyme
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
Directions
- Melt 2 tablespoons of the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add in the onions and reduce the heat to medium low. Cook stirring occasionally, until lightly caramelized, about 25-30 minutes. If the onions start to look dry or burnt, add a tablespoon of water to the pan.
- In a large bowl mix the ground protein with soy sauce and the Worcestershire sauce. Season with salt and pepper.
- Add the protein to the skillet with the onions. Increase heat to medium-high and brown the protein breaking it up and mixing with the onions as you go. Once browned, drain off excess grease.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease a large baking sheet. Separate the tops from the bottom of the slider buns. Fit the slider bottom buns tightly on the baking sheet.
- Evenly distribute the protein and onion mixture over the bottom buns. Top with gruyere cheese. Cover with the top buns.
- In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the 6tbsp. butter with the soy sauce. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce and continue to mix until well combined. Using a pastry brush, brush the beefy butter mixture over the top buns. Sprinkle with the sesame seeds, thyme, onion powder and garlic powder.
